오늘의 필수 영문법은 It seems that / seem to 문법입니다.

 

It seems that과 seem to는 "~한 것 같다"라는 동일한 의미를 가졌습니다. 하지만 두 표현의 문장 구성이 전혀 다르기 때문에 시험에 자주 출제됩니다.

 

그럼 이 두 가지 표현의 차이점을 자세히 알아보도록 하겠습니다.

1. It seems that + 주어 + 동사

It seems that에 포함된 that은 "접속사" 역할을 합니다. 접속사 뒤에는 항상 문장이 나오기 때문에 주어 + 동사가 나오게 됩니다.

예시 문장

• It seems that the weather will be sunny tomorrow. (내일 날씨가 맑을 것 같아요.)
• It seems that they are happy with the results. (그들은 결과에 만족하는 것 같아요.)
• It seems that we have a lot of work to do. (우리는 할 일이 많은 것 같아요.)

이처럼 It seems that 뒤에는 주어와 동사를 포함한 완전한 문장이 옵니다.

시제에 따라서 seems가 seemed로 변형되기도 합니다.

예시 문장

• It seemed that she enjoyed the concert yesterday. (그녀가 어제 콘서트를 즐겼던 것 같아요.)
• It seemed that the children were very excited last night. (아이들이 어젯밤에 매우 신난 것 같아요.)
• It seemed that they were friends for a long time in the past. (그들이 과거에 오랫동안 친구였던 것 같아요.)

 

2. 주어 + seem to + 동사원형

seem to 용법도 it seems that과 똑같이 "~한 것 같다"로 해석됩니다. 하지만 seem to의 to는 to부정사이기 때문에 반드시 뒤에 동사원형이 와야 합니다.

예시 문장

• They seem to enjoy playing soccer. (그들은 축구를 즐기는 것 같다.)
• The instructions seem to be very clear. (지시사항이 매우 명확한 것 같다.)
• She and her brother seem to get along well. (그녀와 그녀의 형제는 잘 지내는 것 같다.)

주어가 3인칭 단수(그, 그녀, 그것)일 때 seems to로 변형됩니다.

예시 문장

• He seems to be very confident. (그는 매우 자신감이 있어 보인다.)
• The new restaurant seems to be popular. (새 레스토랑이 인기 있는 것 같다.)
• My computer seems to be running slow today. (내 컴퓨터가 오늘 느리게 작동하는 것 같다.)

시제가 과거일 때 seemed to로 변형됩니다.

예시 문장

• He seemed to be in a hurry yesterday. (그는 어제 서두르는 것 같았다.)
• The book seemed to interest her a lot. (그 책이 그녀에게 매우 흥미로웠던 것 같다.)

3. It seems that과 seem to의 변환

It seems that과 seem to는 서로 변형할 수 있습니다. 변환하는 방법은 매우 간단합니다.

 

1) 주어 맞추기 - "It seems that + 주어 + 동사"의 주어를 맨 앞으로 옮깁니다. (주어 + seem to + 동사원형)

2) to 뒤에 동사원형 쓰기 - "It seems that + 주어 + 동사"의 동사의 원형을 to 뒤에 작성합니다. (주어 + seem to + 동사원형)

★ 3) 시제 확인하기 - "It seems that + 주어 + 동사"의 seems가 과거형이면 seemed로 바꿔줍니다.

 

예시 문장

• It seems that she is very happy today.
• She seems to be very happy today. (그녀는 오늘 매우 행복한 것 같다.)

 

• It seems that the cat likes the new toy.
• The cat seems to like the new toy. (고양이가 새 장난감을 좋아하는 것 같다.)

 

★ 시제 맞추기

• It seemed that he knew the answer yesterday.
• He seemed to know the answer yesterday. (그는 어제 답을 알고 있었던 것 같다.)

 

• It seemed that she enjoyed the party last night.
• She seemed to enjoy the party last night. (그녀는 어젯밤 파티를 즐긴 것 같았다.)

 

4. 연습문제

※ It seems that 구문은 seem to 구문으로 변경하고 seem to 구문은 It seems that 구문으로 변경하시오. (시제 변형 가능)

1. He seems to be very happy with his new job.
2. It seems that the weather is getting better.
3. They seem to have a good chance of winning the game.
4. It seems that she is feeling better after the treatment.
5. It seems that they are running late for the meeting.
6. The situation seems to be improving slowly.
7. It seems that he is enjoying his vacation.

9. She seems to be quite knowledgeable about the topic.
